ARTEFACT - A CROWN FOR OPHELIA

Artefact idea

The theme of my Hamlet project was Ophelia's love for Hamlet. Since she is often described as flowers, I chose flowers as the metaphor. In addition, the era was the Joseon Dynasty, a period in 19th century Korea as

I wanted to add a Korean mood. Starting from this idea, I decided to create a traditional Korean floral crown for Ophelia.

Skills Passport - Millinery

I chose Millinery as an optional module, so I used some skills that I’ve learned from Millinery class.

The color palette of the crown is yellow.

This is my costume design for Ophelia. I matched flowers similar to each characters’ personality and Ophelia was a daffodil. Her costume was yellow, color of daffodils, so I decided to make the floral crown for her in yellow as well.

Other materials & What to improve

I also tried making different flowers using various materials, but when attached to a headband, they look like a little bit messy and distracting, so I decided not to use them. I was quite pleased with how the floral crown turned out, matching the colors of Ophelia's costume design and the shape of traditional Korean floral crown. Therefore, I decided to continue with it as it is. However, if I were to remake it, I would consider utilizing a variety of colors from Jokduri.

Reflection

Through this artefact project, I was able to utilize what I learned in the Millinery class. I created a crown for Ophelia using my Hamlet project as a basis, and it was personally fulfilling to explore various crowns in the same background which is 19th century Korea. Crafting various styles of flowers to decorate the headband allowed me to not only freely unleash my creativity but also enjoy as well. Thanks to this project, I realized that I have a greater interest in creating props than I thought. If I were to do similar projects in the future, I would try to experiment with a wider range of materials.
