PROJECT 5. CONSTRUCT THE MOMENT
My model & AutoCAD drawing
- For Construct The Moment project, I had to choose a place within the Waverley building and create a model of it at a 1:25 scale. I chose the emergency exit next to the dye garden, measured the dimensions, and created the model. I also completed an AutoCAD drawing.
Team model & AutoCAD drawing
- Our team decided to combine Amy's stairs and Josh's door into one set. We measured the dimensions of each spot and collected reference images. Based on that, we created an AutoCAD drawing. This AutoCAD drawing was used to make the whole set, so we could learn how to construct the actual set by following this drawing.
Scenic painting
- I was interested in scenic painting, so I decided to take charge of it. A scenic artist came and taught us about scenic painting. We learned how to divide an image and paint it onto a large canvas, as well as how to use various tools to depict the textures of wood surfaces and bricks.

Experiments
- Before painting the actual set, I did several experiments using reference images taken from each place. For the surface of the stairs, I first painted them black, then used a sponge with dark gray paint to create a pattern. Finally, I added texture by splattering light gray paint. For the window frame, I used plaster to create a thick, rough texture and applied different colors to create patterns on top of it. I also tried to describe the look of peeling paint on the window frame by attaching pieces of paper.

Lighting & Projection
- We also took classes in lighting and projection. In the lighting class, I learned how to use gobos to create specific shapes with light. In the projection class,
I could try to use various effects
to tell a story with our set. Our team used projections to showthe space and flow of time, and used lighting to emphasize specific situations, such as emergency.
Performance - The Waiting Room
- We created a comedy performance set in a hospital waiting room inspired by the blue walls, door, and stairs. It's about a pregnant woman who ends up being the last to see
a doctor. Each of us played
a role, so the entire team participated in the show. Through this, we were able to bond and had a lot of fun.

Reflection
- Even though I went through some tough times due to personal issues during this project, I was able to complete it as team members were understanding. Through this project, I learned that creating one stage requires collective effort of many people from various fields. I believe the purpose of this project was to experience these different areas while creating a real set and to think about what we find most interesting. I found scenic painting to be the most fascinating and enjoyed it the most when I was actually doing it. This project was meaningful because it allowed me to think about what I like best in the process of making stage and what I want to do in the future. I'd like to focus on scenic painting more from now on.
