PROJECT 2. NARNIA
Newstead Abbey project
: This project is for visitors to Newstead Abbey during Christmas season. There will be a lot of family visitors, especially children.
Therefore, our work had to be at the eye level of the children. We needed to create a work that can interact with children as well as inspire and give them good memories.
Brainstorming
Moodboards
- Narnia
- Tent scene
- Snow scene
Research
- The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe is a book
created by C.s. Lewis in 1950.
- It is part of a series of 7 books.
- All 7 books were illustrated by Pauline Baynes.
- The book has been adapted into a successful movie which premiered 7th December 2005 with a further
two more movies being released in later years.
We researched how life was like in war- time Britain,
in order to know how to dress our piece appropriately.
We looked into books that focused on the home front, focusing on the evacuees, home-guard and posters shown across the UK.
These really helped in getting an idea of the atmosphere/ mood of Britain in the early 1940s.
Initial ideas
We tried to make both a wardrobe that is real-sized and a tent.
However, it was too big to make and needed a lot of time and money.
So, we changed our plan to use three suitcases to show each scene from Narnia.
Final idea
Instead of making the wardrobe, we had a change of our project plan.
We found three old suitcases to creat each scene from Nania and decided to fill each suitcase according to the theme of fantasy and link them together with our ideas.
Our team wanted to present the idea that the story stars from the book, so we made the pieces as an illustrative style and use some pages from the books.
In addition, since a suitcase represents a trip, our work means that we can take a trip through Nania starting from the book.
Snow scene
I made a smaller castle as the template was too big and didn't give enough depth by the trees.
Ideas of painting the castle changed to collage as the scale had to change.
I wanted to use my experiment for the real piece since it also added an ice effect.
Problem solving
We tried snowflake sprinkles to stick in the bottom of the case but it didn’t stick well. So we used cotton wool balls to add plentifulness and stick better.
Final outcome
Reflection
This project was collaboration with DFTV students. To be honest, it was little bit hard to follow the whole process at first since we changed our plan a few times and English is my second language. Nevertheless, it was getting better because my team members helped me understand and communicate well one another. I enjoyed working as a team at the end of the project. I think our work could be made becuase we worked as a team. We planned to make a pretty huge work at first and there were some challenges including moving from a wardrobe to suitcases. This was a challenge since we had to change all the scale. We also had to make sure all our pieces were secure and experimented with different lights and positions, learning how to creat depth. However, we overcame problems well as a group and were able to complete the work that we liked. That is because each of us did a good job and helped one another. Overall, I am pleased with our final outcome and the contribution as a group.
